Lower Mustang trek is the famous trek in Nepal. Nepalese call it as Skyline trek. It is the rain shadow of the Himalaya, so the landscape here is parched. Apple fields and Rododendron forest adds the delicacy of lower Mustang. This solitary trek offers you to see the admirable landscape of Hindu’s and Buddhist’s scared pilgrimage “Muktinath Temple”. Mustang and Jomsom receive less rainfall. However, drastic change in weather could delay your flights from Pokhara to Jomsom. The monsoon season (June to August) can be the favorable season for flight to Jomsom. During monsoon, the weather changes frequently, so it’s adventurous and exciting time for trekking. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are also good time to go Jomsom from Pokhara.
Going for trek in winter is not recommended because the temperature goes to minus degree, the water starts freezing and almost all of the local hotels, lodges and business remain close.Cost Details
Lower Mustang trek is the exciting trek for both domestic as well as International tourist. You should not miss this horrifying trek. Before planning for this trek, you should keep in mind about the cost for different purposes like transportation, accommodations, foods and drinks and many more.
This portion includes three heavy costs. One is flight from your country to Nepal which may cost from $500-$1000 depending on the season. February to May and September to November are the peak seasons. So, you may book the tickets earlier for lowering the price in it.
The next portion includes price from Kathmandu to Pokhara. You can choose either airways or vehicles. Airways take half an hour to reach to Pokhara whereas if you go by bus, it takes 6-7 hours. You can say a whole day if you choose vehicle. The air ticket cost $124-$200 depending upon the airlines. The bus fare is $20-$25 depending on bus service provider.
The final portion includes travelling from Pokhara to Jomsom. The time period is half an hour if you go by air ways. Also, you may choose vehicle but the road is dusty and is risky to go on vehicles during rainfall. It takes a full day to reach Jomsom if you go by bus however; it lowers travelling cost.
2.Visa and Trekking Permit
International tourist except from India need visa and it’s very easy to get. You can get it as soon as you reach the airport in Kathmandu. The cost of visa depends on the time you stay in Nepal. Below is the cost for different time period:3 months stay will cost you $100, 1 month stay will cost you $40 and 15 days stay will cost you $25.
Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) card and Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit (ACAP) are the two permits you will need to have for trekking to lower Mustang. The price for TIMS card can be $10 -$20 depending upon the type you choose and $20 is the price for ACAP.
3.Travel Insurance and Accommodation
There is no option of travel insurance in Nepal. You need to bring medical equipment’s on you own. However, nowadays there is a travel insurance package provided by different travel agencies.The accommodation charge is cheap in Jomsom. It ranges form $1-$3. The lodges have two single beds with blankets. You should bring toilet paper on you own.
Local hotels and restaurant offer you Dhal- Bhat with soup, meat (chicken/fish). The price ranges from$4-$5 per meal. The drinks cost $3-$5 per bottle. So, you may ask to refill the bottle in cheap price. A total of $320 can be enough for food and drinks.
You may hire guides for your safeties. If you are comfortable with the route you may not hire them too. The price range for a tour guide is about $20-$25 per day.Thus, planning for cost before going to lower Mustang trek is what a best trekker must do. You can see that the price is high for travelling purpose. So, you may go to Pokhara on bus.
You can reduce extra expenses likes buying clothes, hats, boots etc. The trek is not so expensive if you plan it well. But, it depends on you how you plan and decrease your cost.
