Heavy Snowfall Hits Western Hills

Once again, heavy snowfalls have affected normal life across the far-western and mid western hills. The Mountains areas are fully covered by snow.
By Saturday morning, snow that started failing since Friday night has covered most of towns in the hilly districts and mountains of the far-western and mid-western development regions. In some northern most villages of these two areas, it was still snowing till late Saturday evening.
After heavy snowfalls, flights have been cancelled and roads have been blocked. Passengers have been stranded on roads and airports. Cattle have been trapped in their sheds. In some places, snowfalls have also thrown micro-hydro plants out of operation.
According to Jumla-based Republica correspondent D.B Budha, snowfalls have badly affected normal life in all 3. Village Development Committees of the district. With sharp fall in temperature, a direct result of snowfall, people are seen huddling around fire-places inside their houses.
In Surkhet and nepalgung airports, no plane took off for any of the districts in the karnali area. People scheduled to visit Karnali by air returned from airports as all flights were cancelled due to snowfalls.
Snowfall completely halted transport service along the karnali highway. Several buses heading toward Mugu and Jumla have been stranded along the highway.
According to Mugu based epublica representative Sumal malla, Gamgadhi, the district headquarters, wore a deserted look on Saturday as people preferred to stay home amidst snowfall. Most of Villages in the district were covered with snow by Saturday.
According to Humla based republica correspondent janak Bahadur Shahi, as many as 17 villages in Humla received snow while some villages like madan and Shrinagar were lashed by rain on Saturday.With snowfall, Humla, the country’s only district that is yet to be connected with the rest of the country by road, has been off, Humla airport has been closed.
According to klikot based Republica representative pabitra Kumar Shahi, all 30 VDC’s of the district have been hit by snowfall, somewhere combined with rain. Manma, the district headquarters, looked virtually deserted.
According to dolpa based Republica representative Pushpa Shahi, cattle are one of the worst-hit by snowfall. They were trapped in their sheds all the day.
In manag and Mustang, according to Pokhara based republica representative santos Pokheral, it snowed all day long. Just two days ago, anowflakes had been received in Mustang. “Today, It is not just snowflake but heavy snowfall,” said Bidur Kuninkel, Mustang office chief of Annapurna Conservation Area project (ACAP).
