A record 12.91 million tourists visited Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), the western half of ethnographic Tibet, in 2013, with the figure being expected to rise to 15 million by 2015, reported China’s official Xinhua news agency Feb 2. The 2013 figure represented nearly 4.5 times the official census population of the TAR.
Overseas tourists face a host of restrictions for visiting the TAR both in terms of being required to applying for special permits and when undertaking the visit and these are designed to limit direct contact and interaction with the Tibetan people.
Hance, at more than 223,000, overseas tourists made up a miniscule portion of the visitors. Nevertheless, even this figure, at around 1.7 percent, was a 14.5 percent increase over the previous year, according to the report.
Income from tourism was reported to be 16.51 billion Yuan US $ 2.72 billion) a year on year increase of 30.6 percent.
The report said the number of tourists visiting the TAR had increase by an average of 3. Percent annually over the past six years. It added that 3330,000 people in the TAR, or 11 percent of the population, worked in the tourism sector.
